Xpect Results

Well, I went over my $20 limit yesterday - but there was a good reason.
1.  My list was longer than I remembered it being
2.  Darned close out merchandise got me.

Close out purchase was a pack of puppy pads (they are used to line our pet cage - under the fleece bedding). I usually get them at Ocean State Job Lot for 9.99/pack.  Xpect had one pack left for 6.99!   I would have grabbed 2 if they had them.

As to my list being longer, I forgot that we were out of 1st aid ointment, I found a coupon for my Deoderant on the shelf so bought more than the 1 I went in for, my hairspray coupon was expired - I'm totally out so had to buy it.  Also they had the low sodium mild flavor taco mix that hubby likes so I grabbed 8 packs - it's never at the grocery store near us.  Also picked up some fruit because the price was great and quality was good.

Not disappointed since I was only $8 over my target $ amount.

Unexpected Errand = Xpect Run

This morning, hubby called to ask me to run something he needs today to his office.  This means I get to drive right past Xpect!  Guess it was meant to be - I will finish my coffee and head in that direction.  I have a short running list for there in my purse.  I'm thinking I will be out of there under $20. This is mostly because we are so well stocked on food items - my list is non-food based, non urgent but still needed items (hairspray, toilet tablets etc).

21 Day Fix

You've maybe seen the infomercial?  I am trying it.  No I didn't buy it!  It's $80!  I found a site that explains the cute little colored boxes you're supposed to put the foods in, and how many you get, and how much they actually hold.

I have oodles of Tupperware type containers and plenty of measuring cups, so for thus week - starting tomorrow I'm going to try it out and see how I feel over the next few days.

Pinterest is my friend for ideas, I have my bike, feet, treadmill and elliptical - I figure I can get more movement in than I have the last couple weeks - that will Be an improvement

Food Waste Friday

Jumping on MamaFish's bandwagon:

It's my first FoodWasteFriday post!

I have a confession - I'm not good about tracking my  Food Waste like I was a few years ago, partly because I have 2 growing teens that eat a LOT!
This week though this is what went into the trash as unedible. Trash day is Tuesdays.  I cleaned my pantry on Saturday though

From the pantry:

  • Half a large container of Fluff  it was a rock - bought last fall I think....no one likes it :-)
  • Half a box of cheapy spaghetti - why only half a box was cooked I don't know
  • 2 half boxes of no bake lasagna noodles - this made me mad
  • 1/2 pound of decaf ground coffee - smelled off/old
  • 8 packs of microwave popcorn (sell by date was 2011) I tried one as a snack - Yucko!  Oil was rancid
  • 1 cut steel cut oats (rancid smelling)
  • 1 large bottle of Kraft BBQ sauce (sell by date 2010) probably fine - but not a flavor we like (I have more of one we do and an awesome homemade recipie)
  • 2 bags of specialty pancake mix both dated 2012 and both have nuts in the mix....tossed without smelling for rancidness
  • 2 jars fat free turkey gravy - too risky dated 2011
  • 1.5 pounds brown rice dared April 15 but smelled very very rancid!  Have to store that in the freezer
  • 1 partial quart homemade granola from a relative (no one here liked the flavor)
  • 6 cans carnation evaporated milk (dated 2013) - bought for baking on super duper sale I'm sure...because I wanted to put the cans in recycling I shook the heck out of them then tried to pour them down the sink- there was about 1/2 inch of milk solids at the bottom that wouldn't reincorporate to the liquid.  My little experiment proved to me - unless they are giving it away, I will but what I need and can use before the coded date stamp.  YUCK!
From the Fridge:
  • 1/2 quart of vanilla yogurt (fuzzy)
  • 8 squishy strawberries
  • 1 cup green beans from dinner (last week?)
  • 1/2 entemans raspberry Danish -
I will My goal is to be better this week - our composting has gone by the wayside since we will gave to relocate the garden next spring (none this year). My compost bin has always been in my garden - but we need to re-roof the shed next to it and that's where the dumpster needs to be :-/

Root canal - or - shoe shopping w teens

I can't decide which is worse -
I had to take the kids sandal shopping, blown out flip flop and growing feet - kids with champagne tastes on my beer budget.  They really just need something basic - not like their hiking boots or sneakers, which they actually wear more.  Makes me want to open a bottle of wine and forget the day

It RAINED!

Holy cow did it pour down this afternoon.  Right now CL&P/Eversource says 50% of my town was without power as of 10 minutes ago.  There was loads of house shaking thunder and zaps of lightening- very scary!  We only list power at my house for 10 minutes tops.  Fine with me since I sill needed to cook dinner, although peanut butter & banana sandwiches and cereal would have been fine with me. The others would have held a mutiny.

I skipped the paint store in lieu of a trip to shop rite for fruit and romaine hearts.  Worth it.

Rough Weather coming - getting ready

It is officially hurricane season in CT.  Just saw on the news we could have damaging thunderstorms tomorrow.  Depending on when the rain comes - it will determine my errands on the way home from the kids appointment.

This is my Public Service Announcement - have your emergency plans in place - easy to or no cook foods ready.  Those who have lived thru Gloria, Hugo, Irene and Sandy - not to mention the great summer blackout of 2002 and Snowmageddon....it's easier to prep a little at a home than all at once.

If it's stormy you can bet I'll be filling pans with water for washing, filling the tub to flush, and the during cooler jugs to drink...just in case

Happy Summer & a New Look

Happy Summer!  Today was glorious outside!  I didn't get any laundry hung out since I had to drive almost an hour away for an appointment and was feeling that Murphy's Law would strike.  It's all on the racks down stairs drying away.

I took some time with my coffee to update the look of my blog a little - since it's summer. (I've used this template before)

Meals were cooked at home from the freezer/fridge or leftovers today.  There was one exception. Hubby picked up milk, French bread and squash for dinner tonight - which was fine.  Items on my list for the week.

Tomorrow has me at another dr appointment for the kids - should be a quick one.  Hoping to stop at the local Sherwin Williams for sample cards too.  Then I need to ride (encourage) them to do their summer reading for school so I can return the books to the library in case another student needs them.  And it will be nice to get it done!

I konmari'd my tshirt drawer over the weekend - it didn't take as long as I thought it would.  Did it while I Caught up on an episode of Game of a thrones using the hbo freeview that cable was running.

I'm hoping to make a dent in the playroom this week - if not this weekend.  It will be easier for them to weed out their bedrooms if that room is clean.  They can use the old train table as a staging/sorting area, but first I have to just bite the bullet & make a run through the room as a first sort - trying to get them to will be way go difficult for all 3 of us.  I had a dream of a drafting table going in there as my Scrapbooking nook workspace and saw a nice basic one at the habitat restore last week - if it's still there after I get the room clean, it's meant to be.

Finally Clean!

I have glass shower doors (curved of course). Over the years I have struggled with hard water and soap scum (hubs is a bar o' soap man). I've tried nearly every product out there - most require liars of scrubbing and breathing the fumes....  I was talking go a friend in town who has similarly hard water like ours (yes we have a treatment system for the house) she tried and lied the Dollar Tree a Totally Awesome version of Kaboom.  I was at DT this afternoon and figured what the hell.  It's a buck, if it doesn't work great I won't buy it again...it works ok.  I will try it next week and see if I like it any better then.  Here is what did work though on the doors at least.  A paint scraper (with the razor blade). I will be touching up some windows this summer and wanted some little scrapers and DT has them 4/$1.  I don't know what made think if this now - maybe it was scraping my town beach pass off my old mini van windshield this morning so town hall will give me a new one for the Prius (rather than buy one). Well - not to gross anyone out, but it worked great for the soap scum (it's been 3 weeks since the doors had a hearty scrubbing (the rest of the shower has had a quick weekly wash down).  The stuff just came off!  So I took an hour and did the glass portion of the shower - the walls are a composite so when I hit the paint store thus week I will hunt down a good plastic version scraper.

After the scraping I used the DT Kaboom and scrubbed the rest of the shower and the kids tub which was in desperate shape - I did notice it's not stellar, but like I said - it's been a good 3 weeks since the bathrooms have had a good through scrub down.  Maybe it's a good enough produce god weekly cleaning....not nuts about the fumes from it though - so I may go back to my Lysol Power & Free to avoid fumes.  Everyone freaked out when I made my own lemon & vinegar natural cleaners - wimps!

Pantry questions - looking for advice

I weeded thru the pantries today (our kitchen is small so some stuff lives in a cupboard in the mud room) there are some questionable items - advice sought from readers....

Here is what I tossed in the trash - makes me mad - since it's tossing $ but it would cost more in dr bills if we got sick from any of it

Half a large container of Fluff  it was a rock - bought last fall I think....no one likes it :-)
Half a box of cheapy spaghetti - why only half a box was cooked I don't know
2 half boxes of no bake lasagna noodles - this made me mad
1/2 pound of decaf ground coffee - smelled off/old
8 packs of microwave popcorn (sell by date was 2011) I tried one as a snack - Yucko!  Oil was rancid
1 cut steel cut oats (rancid smelling)
1 large bottle of Kraft BBQ sauce (sell by date 2010) probably fine - but not a flavor we like (I have more of one we do and an awesome homemade recipie)
2 bags of specialty pancake mix both dated 2012 and both have nuts in the mix....tossed without smelling for rancidness
2 jars fat free turkey gravy - too risky dated 2011
1.5 pounds brown rice dared April 15 but smelled very very rancid!  Have to store that in the freezer
1 partial quart homemade granola from a relative (no one here liked the flavor)

Here are the questionable items.....do you think they are safe to eat or should I toss 'em?
2 jars of pickle relish (dated 2012)
6 cans carnation evaporated milk (dated 2013) - bought for baking on super duper sale I'm sure...
Bottle of yellow mustard (dated 2011)

I do feel better having gone through this today...I feel like I have a better grip on what's in the pantries and all the shelves are wiped down and I used my label maker to label the mudroom shelves.  I have an idea of things I will be cooking up this week to velar out the pantry space too.

#1 tule of food storage is store what you eat and eat what you store - just have to be better about the practice of it!

Waste Not Casserole

Tonight's dinner was inspired by 1.5 large boneless chicken breasts I had roasted last night. (The other 2.5 were turned into homemade nuggets last night for dinner) there was a medium ham steak, 3/4 bag (6oz) shredded mozzarella in the freezer, some broccoli that needed to be eaten tonight, a tube of biscuits (10 ct) and a can of aldi cream of chicken soup from the pantry.

Sort of a ham & chicken divan theme.  And I have leftovers for my supper tomorrow night.

Chop all the meats small, steam the broccoli in the microwave (2 minutes), mix with the cream soup and 3/4 can of milk - pour in the 9x13, top with cheese and biscuits - bake at 350 about 25 minutes (depends on the biscuits so they are cooked and not gluey on the bottom)

Kids gobbled it up...and it took about 20 minutes to mix up (mostly chopping time)

Dollar Tree!

Wow, spent the most I have in ages at Dollar Tree this morning. $17.04!
4 boxes of Scottie's tissues
6 Fathers Day cards
2 graduation cards
1qt hydrogen peroxide
3 bags of chex mix
2 3pks of jif peanut butter singles (good price & perfect for backpacking for the kids)
1 container of "gold bond" powder (backpacking item in a recycled spice shaker cut with some cornstarch)
1 container of chili powder (ran out making taco mix last month)

I didn't have any tissue coupons - but the pollen is killing me this year - I didn't care since I opened our last box last night.

Tomorrow is a Goodwill day - couple things have made my list of things to find for the kids for summer....

Gotta love FB Tagsale

This weekend I noticed that a lady in town was selling an elliptical trainer - something I've wanted since my spine can't handle jogging any more.  We have a treadmill but I can't even run on that just walk...which can get really boring every day, especially in winter - even while watching tv.

Well being watchful of my $$ I refused to buy a brand new one. So I've been looking for a decent basic one on craigslist - but I'm kinda wimpy and don't like the idea of going to strangers homes (too much news watching).

This weekend this lady in town listed one on the Facebook tag sale in our area - I messages her, went today and came home with it.  Kids helped me unload it from the truck and it's ready for tomorrow's inaugural workout.  It's just what I wanted, and well within my budget.  Way cheaper than going to the gym in town too!

I'm really happy I took my time and waited!  Plus I know the person selling it.

Saturday to myself!

My kids have been home from school for the past week.  And of course until all the summer activities get into full swing they've been hanging out with each other.  Mostly getting along but also a fair amount of squabbling that makes me so mad I want to lock myself in my bedroom for a time out.

Today they are away all day :-). Hubby is off for the day and I'm alone - it's so peaceful and quiet.  I could tackle one of the many many many Decluttering home organizing tasks - and I might....after I blog, and watch Orange is the New Black with my coffee.

I will probably venture out to Shoprite....and BJs later in the afternoon.   But for now I will enjoy the free silence.

So far - So good

Busy week but surviving it - barely, major allergy attacks have me a swollen eyed, sneezy snot monster.  I've decided we need a good 2 - 3 days of steady soaking rains to wash all the pollen down out of the air and into the ground.

I will be running to walgreens in the morning for some Claritin or Allegra since the Zyrtec has decided to stop working.  The allergist we used warned me this can happen and it has :-(. Such a drag....

Yesterday found me at big y with 2 teens after the dentist - what a mistake, it was a costly error - but the oldest did fine the in aisle coupon machine for almond milk that hubby drinks so it wasn't a total loss.  We in a moment of weakness got a canister of peanut butter filled pretzel bites.  It's completely empty now!  We love pretzels and peanut butter so these were awesome and sadly now gone.

Mostly I picked up things we were out of for snacks and fruit and almond milk.  Trying to be good with $$.

Planning - why it's important

Let's face it, a day without a plan can turn into a good thing or a really bad thing.
I'm trying to be better about making realistic plans - those ones where I know I can succeed, it eliminates feeling irritated when things don't get finished or go sideways (which with busy teens it can happen)
So far here's how the week ahead looks -

Monday - clean something in the house and do laundry.  Can't say just what will get cleaned/purged as there are so many areas to get under control with the end of school busy days - my allergies also will play into this too.

Tuesday - dentist appointments for kids & clean something else

Wednesday - dr appointment for kids, volunteer meeting in the evening - probably grocery shopping day

Thursday - sports awards potluck -

Friday - more cleaning!  We have a lot of de-cluttering to do before the kids go to camp (I'm painting their bedrooms while they are gone)

Had errands up north today that had me driving right by aldi.  Stopped in and picked up a few items.  No list and limited cash kept me to $25.63

Unexpected laundry deal

The morning I needed to go to Home Depot to look for a light fixture for one of the kiddos bedroom. As I walked in there was a table of Super  Clearance laundry products - yay!
I picked up, 2 50 load bottles of Method detergent for 3.33 each and 1 bottle of Downey unstoppable in wash scent booster for 1.33!

The detergent was a great deal, I tried it once when it was on sale and used a coupon, but still was pricer than I Could afford regularly.

The Unstopables - not something I would normally use - but, I have some little organza sachet bags I want to fill with these and toss into the camper while it is being stored.  I did try some in a load of bath towels and they smell awesome out of the dryer - maybe one/some of those sachets will make it into the linen closet too - rather than in the wash.  Since hubby and kiddos didn't like the lavender ones I used to put in there....
