Super cheap Supper

hubby came home on Thursday with boneless beef short ribs.  I cooked them in the crockpot today.  He goes to work Monday with instructions to get more if they're on sale still.
Huge success!  Super simple, yummy
This is the recipie I used....

Crock Pot Boneless Beef Short Ribs (4 servings)
  • 2 to 2 1/2 lbs boneless beef short ribs
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1 large onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
2 tablespoons cornstarch, to thicken the sauce after cooking

Dredge them in flour, salt & pepper, brown in oil - transfer to crockpot.  Deglaze pan with wine pour that in the crockpot.  Add everything else. Cook on low 6-8 hours.  All done!

I've started to buy wine for sipping and cooking in the little bottles.  It works out the same, but if it's just our family, I'm the only wine goes bad before I finish it.

  1. Here's a tip: wine can be frozen if you feel it goes off before you use it. I's either make icecubes out of it, or freeze in 1/2-1 cup measurements-whatever amount is more commonly used in your kitchen. Would that be cheaper than a small bottle? Sounds like DH works in a grocery store.

  2. I've tried freezing the wine, but now the freezer is full! Hubby has a great grocery store across the street from his office, he runs over for lunch some days and calls to tell me if there is something good on sale. Works well for us
